How to install a ceiling fan easily

Most folks would (rightly) agree that when you put up a ceiling fan in the DFW area, it’s a matter of necessity as it stays hot for most of the year in our area. So putting up a fan any time of year makes a lot of sense.
Fan Plan: A Ceiling fan disperses the AC cooling nicely around the room and saves lots of money in energy bills. That’ why choosing the right size and more than that, the spot where you install it, is the key. The spot should be above or near where you normally sit and the blades need to be about 7’ above the floor for a good cooling effect. In the case of angled ceilings, use a sufficiently long down rod for preventing the blades from touching the ceiling. Along with the fan, buy these tools, if you don’t have them already.
Tools: Voltage tester, wire stripper-cutter, nut driver, pliers, wrench set, screwdriver, tape measure and a hammer. All of these should be well insulated and shock-proof. You would also need a 2 ft level, a bench or small ladder to stand on and a new fan brace after you have these in hand, you’re ready for the task.

How to fit the ceiling fan?

Usually, in Dallas and Fort Worth, ceiling fan points in the ceiling are pre-planned along with the wiring from the switch. Using the voltage tester, check whether the connection is working. Now, turn off the circuit breaker and make doubly sure that the power supply is disconnected.
Ceiling fans are housed in a box fixture in the roof and the old box has plastic/ metal clamps. Bend or loosen the clamps and remove the box using the hammer and a block of wood. Pull the wires you find there using pliers. If you can access the ceiling hole from the attic, fit the brace from there; otherwise, maneuver the brace through the box. This needs a bit of dexterity and care, failing which, you’re likely to damage the recess or even worse, sprain your back.
Slip the wires you’ve pulled earlier through the brace and mount the new box in place. Assemble the fan and down rod following manufacturer’s instructions, taking care to follow the color coding of the wires. Grounding wires are green, neutral wiring is white and the power cables are blue/black.  Now mount the fan to fit snugly in the box. Switch on the circuit breaker, check that the fan is working properly. Switch off the mains and fit the covering plate. The fan is now ready.
Last word: unless, you’re fairly familiar with electrical work, call an electrician to install the first fan and learn by observation. That’d be safer and simpler.

tdlr_logo

Are Electricians licensed?

Electricians working in the State of Texas are required to be licensed by the by the “Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation”

Are there different levels of Licensing?

Yes, there are 4 levels of licensing for Electricians.
  • Apprentice Electrician
Someone new to the trade is considered an Apprentice. Upon 2 years of supervised training and obtaining a passing score on an electrical exam, they become a Wireman Electrician.
  • Wireman Electrician
A Wireman Electrician is able to work unsupervised in any residential home. They cannot work in the commercial field without a Journeyman Electrician present.
  • Journeyman Electrician
At Caddell, all of the electricians we send to your home to work on your electrical system hold this license. To be a Journeyman Electrician, one must complete 8000 hours of work under a Master Electrician and pass a written exam.

Go Green-Save Money

Did you know you could save a lot of money by going green? A few simple yet effective tips like Setting your thermostat low or high depending on the weather, Unplugging appliances when you’re not using them, Washing clothes in cold water, Using a drying rack or clothesline or installing compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) could help you save a lot of energy . This will in turn help you save money.

Going Green

Green Business Certified
Energy Efficient BulbHow can we live lightly on the Earth and save money at the same time? Climate change is in the news. It seems like everyone’s “going green.” We’re glad you want to take action, too. Luckily, many of the steps we can take to stop climate change can make our lives better. Our grandchildren-and their children-will thank us for living more sustainably. Let’s start now.
  • Save energy to save money.
    1. Set your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer to save on heating and cooling costs.
    2. Unplug appliances when you’re not using them. Or, use a “smart” power strip that senses when appliances are off and cuts “phantom” or “vampire” energy use.
    3. Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible. As much as 85 percent of the energy used to machine-wash clothes goes to heating the water.
    4. Use a drying rack or clothesline to save the energy otherwise used during machine drying. If you must use a dryer, consider adding dryer balls to cut drying time.
    5. Install compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) when your older incandescent bulbs burn out.

      Tip of the Month:

If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year, more than $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars
  • Keep electronics out of the trash.
    1. Keep your cell phones, computers, and other electronics as long as possible.
    2. Donate or recycle them responsibly when the time comes. E-waste contains mercury and other toxins and is a growing environmental problem.
    3. Recycle your cell phone.
    4. Ask your local government to set up an electronics recycling and hazardous waste collection event.

Need a Second Opinion?

At Caddell Electric, we understand that spending thousands of dollars can be unexpected. We recommend getting a second opinion for any large job. Even a third opinion is a good idea. Upgrading or adding to your existing electrical system is a major decision. Here are some things to look for when comparing estimates.
  • Are all companies reputable and members of the Better Business Bureau?
  • Have you compared the B.B.B reports and checked for complaints?
  • Are all estimates for the exact same work. Make sure you are comparing apples to apples.
  • Check warranty information. How long a company stands behind their work is often a good criteria for decision making.
  • Are all estimates relatively close in price? There is an industry average for electrical work. Bids that appear to be too high should really be examined closely.
Caddell Electric is a proud member of the Better Business Bureau. We invite you to check us out at www.bbb.com.
There are many companies working illegally without insurance, licenses, or a Master Electrician who charge extremely cheap prices. There are also companies who charge 3x the average cost of work and hope you pay because you don’t know any better. If you have a question or just want to know if your estimate is in the right price range, give us a call and we will be glad to help you.
Want that free second opinion now??? Click Here

Electrical System

THIS IS THE HEART OF YOUR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AND SHOULD BE INSPECTED YEARLY
We specialize in electrical panels, meter bases, and code compliance issues. If you feel that your electrical system needs to be inspected by one of our licensed electricians, please contact us today by calling 214-329-4567 or submit an online request form.
NOTE:
  • Have you heard of a Federal Pacific or Zinsco electrical panel?
  • Has someone told you “Your breaker box is dangerous”?
  • Did you know that these “Stab-Lock” breakers can fail to “trip”?
  • Federal Pacific and Zinsco breaker boxes are no longer UL listed and should be replaced
*Caddell Electric is not implying that if you own “Stab Lock” designed breakers your home will burn. It is however, safe to say that if you do in fact own this type of breaker, have a short circuit, and it fails to “trip”, the potential for a fire is great.
Here are a few facts from the U.S. Fire Administration regarding house fires.
During a typical year, home electrical problems account for 67,800 fires, 485 deaths, and $868 million in property losses. Home electrical wiring causes twice as many fires as electrical appliances.

The Facts

December is the most dangerous month for electrical fires. Fire deaths are highest in winter months which call for more indoor activities and increase in lighting, heating, and appliance use. Most electrical wiring fires start in the bedroom.

The Cause

Electrical Wiring
  • Most electrical fires result from problems with “fixed wiring” such as faulty electrical outlets and old wiring. Problems with cords and plugs, such as extension and appliance cords, also cause many home electrical fires.
In urban areas, faulty wiring accounts for 33% of residential electrical fires.
Many avoidable electrical fires can be traced to misuse of electric cords, such as overloading circuits, poor maintenance and running the cords under rugs or in high traffic areas.
Home Appliances
  • The home appliances most often involved in electrical fires are electric stoves and ovens, dryers, central heating units, televisions, radios and record players.
Safety Precautions
  • Routinely check your electrical appliances and wiring.
  • Frayed wires can cause fires. Replace all worn, old or damaged appliance cords immediately.
  • Use electrical extension cords wisely and don’t overload them.
  • Keep electrical appliances away from wet floors and counters; pay special care to electrical appliances in the bathroom and kitchen.
  • When buying electrical appliances, look for products evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory, such as
  • Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
  • Don’t allow children to play with or around electrical appliances like space heaters, irons and hair dryers.
  • Keep clothes, curtains and other potentially combustible items at least three feet from all heaters.
  • If an appliance has a three-prong plug, use it only in a three-slot outlet. Never force it to fit into a two-slot outlet or extension cord.
  • Never overload extension cords or wall sockets. Immediately shut off, then professionally replace light switches, that are hot to the touch, and lights that flicker. Use safety closures to “child-proof” electrical outlets.
  • Check your electrical tools regularly for signs of wear. If the cords are frayed or cracked, replace them. Replace any tool if it causes even small electrical shocks, overheats, shorts out or gives off smoke or sparks.
